Summary

Introducing the Collins Modern Classics, a series featuring some of the most significant books of recent times, books that shed light on the human experience – classics which will endure for generations to come。

That girl didn’t want to die。 She just wanted out of that house。 She wanted out of that decorating scheme。

The five Lisbon sisters – beautiful, eccentric, and, now, gone –had always been a point of obsession for the entire neighborhood。

Although the boys that once loved them from afar have grown up, they remain determined to understand a tragedy that has defied explanation。 The question persists – why did all five of the Lisbon girls take their own lives?

This lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life announced the arrival of one of the greatest American novelists of the last thirty years。

‘A flare from my own secret world, all the inchoate longings, and obsessions of being a teenager somehow rendered into book form’ Emma Cline, author of The Girls

this being the first book i read in 2023 is soo lovely

Anne Jensen

Not my preferred genre, but I can definitely see why people would love it

My first book of 2023 and not sure what to make of it。 Beautifully tragic in that all 5 sisters die but also disgusting with how much these boys were obsessed with them and how much it perpetuates the male gaze through the narrative POV。 This is what makes the book so good though - it shows the sisters weren’t understood at all 。

I wasn’t too sure how to really feel about this book。 I did read it in 2 hours, I’m guessing because I throughly wanted to know what was going on。 It wasn’t a terrible book, written very well。 However, I feel like it was just a foreshadow the whole time, I didn’t really learn anything, besides that the sisters all took their lives。

clearly confused

I get the point of the critique of the male gaze — but like lowkey it dragged on because I couldn't keep track of where we were💀💀 I get the point of the critique of the male gaze — but like lowkey it dragged on because I couldn't keep track of where we were💀💀 。。。more

i personally really enjoyed this book because it shows that the girls needed help and the boys saw that but really only liked the idea of them。 the boys didn’t really care much about the girls because the boys just wanted the girls。 they didn’t bother helping them。 i like how the author wrote in the perspective of the neighbors (boys) instead of the girls because it showed the outside perspective into the girls lives。

the collective narrative took a while to get used to but the writing was quite good and i think it’s a really really good critique of the male gaze

Simplemente male gaze de principio a fin。 Pero love the girls

my fault with tvs is my only real comment on it after finishing is "good book!" less flowery language than i usually read -- but i think that adds to it。 our narrators are men, the practicality and down to earth language really encompasses this。 still, the imagery of weight and death it creates is powerful - the fish flies and the elm tries especially stick with me。 i do wish we got to explore the other sisters more - the focus was mostly on lux, and i think the snippets we got of the other sist my fault with tvs is my only real comment on it after finishing is "good book!" less flowery language than i usually read -- but i think that adds to it。 our narrators are men, the practicality and down to earth language really encompasses this。 still, the imagery of weight and death it creates is powerful - the fish flies and the elm tries especially stick with me。 i do wish we got to explore the other sisters more - the focus was mostly on lux, and i think the snippets we got of the other sisters shows they had intricate and interesting lives, too。 but perhaps thats the point。 lux was the sexual, scandalous sister。 it makes sense our male narrators would focus on her。 decent book, i think following kafka on the shore is a hard task for any book 。。。more

Masterpiece。 Art。 Shows perfectly the confinements of being a girl。 A wonderful satire, a perfect metaphor on how women more often than not go unspoken and a very real, disgusting insight to the male gaze。

Sensationalist junk riddled with racism and misogyny。 It was recommended to me as a story with narrative uniqueness, but there is nothing groundbreaking about its 2nd-person collective narrative--one undermined even more by its maleness。 It is male narration written by a male author; the women (who are supposed to be the central point of the novel) are one-dimensional。 What was the revelation I should have had? That teenage boys have no empathy for their female peers? The book was definitely a very hard read, only due to how triggering this book actually is。 Suicide again is a very triggering topic, so I do not recommend anyone to read this book if you can’t digest such a heavy topic。 It does get increasingly graphic… and just the ideology behind the book is just… much。 The way these 5 girls (literal minors) were presented in the minds of these adolescent boys is horrifying, especially since they soon go on to mention how enthralled they still are with them g The book was definitely a very hard read, only due to how triggering this book actually is。 Suicide again is a very triggering topic, so I do not recommend anyone to read this book if you can’t digest such a heavy topic。 It does get increasingly graphic… and just the ideology behind the book is just… much。 The way these 5 girls (literal minors) were presented in the minds of these adolescent boys is horrifying, especially since they soon go on to mention how enthralled they still are with them going late into there 30’s-40’s。 。。。more

I personally felt while reading this book that I had to push myself to finish it, as I got bored from some parts, because I felt like it was dragging on。 But I do have to say this book shows the struggles of being a teenage girl。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 The Virgin Suicides offers a snapshot into a moment in time; post World War II, where everyone is already in global despair。 I really appreciated the characters of Lux and Cecilia, how even in the minds of those around them, they still were full characters。 I would’ve appreciated more from the other three sisters, to feel the same attachement to them that they had with each other。 One of my favourite things about this book is the paradox of self-reflexivity。 The boys who narrate the book constan The Virgin Suicides offers a snapshot into a moment in time; post World War II, where everyone is already in global despair。 I really appreciated the characters of Lux and Cecilia, how even in the minds of those around them, they still were full characters。 I would’ve appreciated more from the other three sisters, to feel the same attachement to them that they had with each other。 One of my favourite things about this book is the paradox of self-reflexivity。 The boys who narrate the book constantly tell us, the reader, that the news outlets who turn the girls’ suicides into big media moments that they didn’t understand the girls。 How much did the boys? They had to supplement their memories with so many other peoples to give us even a fractured glimpse into their world。 They had Cecilia’s diary and they didn’t even know what she meant。 I think that this was so beautiful and so well-done。 。。。more
